Dambulla is well-known for its five cave temples built into a rock. The first three caves are superior to the other two in terms of quality, age, and size. Some caves date from the first century BC. Polonnaruwa is a historic city in Sri Lanka. Polonnaruwa, the former location of Sri Lanka's second mediaeval capital, enchants visitors with a timeless representation of the country's illustrious past. On the east coast of the historic artificial lake, Parakrama Samudraya, are charming landscapes dotted with important archaeological monuments that have all been conserved.
The sites are a bit too overwhelming to see solely on foot, so peddling one's way around them is the ideal way to see and appreciate their archaic splendour. Those who aren't very interested in history can prefer to visit one of the several national wildlife parks close to Polonnaruwa and enjoy viewing the local species in their undisturbed natural habitats.
Elephants can be observed in herds of 100 to 150 roaming the jungle in this 8,889-hectare national park, which lies in the catchment area of Minneriya Lake. The Minneriya National Park is home to about 300 wild elephants, buffaloes, wild boars, spotted deer, sloth bears, crocodiles, jackals, nine amphibians, 25 types of reptiles, 160 species of birds, 26 varieties of fish, 78 types of butterflies.

The island's most fantastic single wonder is the 5th-century 'Fortress in the Sky' built by King Kasyapa. Because of the enormous lion that once stood at the fortress's entryway, it is also known as Lion Rock. The enormous rock rises to over 500 feet within its triple-moated defence. The ruins of a large, opulent palace with gardens and a swimming pool may still be seen at its peak. The only old Sinhala secular painting still visible today is a series of murals on one of the stairways, including life-size damsels painted with all the delicate freshness of their original hues.

Pinnawala is well-known for the elephant orphanage that is located nearby, and it is a must-see because it will undoubtedly make your stay on this paradise island unforgettable. It was founded in 1975 and served as an elephant nursery, orphanage, and captive breeding facility.
Unlike many other elephant orphanages, such as Udawalawe, visitors to Pinnawala can observe elephants, particularly baby jumbos, being bottle-fed and bathed up close in their pens. Most of the elephants housed at the orphanage are used by visitors and, thus, are safe.

Galle is the major city on the south coast, and its oldest landmark is the massive 17th-century Portuguese and Dutch Fort, which houses the central city. There are strong Dutch influences in the architecture along the streets, as well as some old British residences and various mosques with Arabic touches. Turtle Hatchery - The Ahungalla hatchery in the Southern province was one of the first attempts to save local turtles from extinction. The Ahangama hatchery, run by the Sri Lanka Wildlife Protection Society, provides a unique wildlife experience. Visitors can observe newborn turtles and some rare adult turtle species, such as the Olive Ridley, Hawksbill, Green Turtle, Loggerhead, and Leatherback, swimming around the massive tanks as they beat their flippers against the water.
